Note: The Annual Fair "Maiden Fair on Gaina Mountain"
or "Târgul de fete de pe Muntele Gaina" (altitude 1485
m / 4870 ft).
In Muntii Apuseni (Apuseni Mountains) villages are located at high altitude
(some over 4000 ft) and houses are scattered all over.. Living condition
were harsh. Meeting people was not easy, that's why once a year on July
20 (Sfantul Ilie or Saint Elijah) young people met on Muntele Gaina.
After 2 or 3 summers, marriages were decided. Nowadays, "Targul
de fete" is a country fair with music, dance, and lots of things
to buy. And yes, you can buy your sweetheart a heart-shaped gingerbread
cookie.
